Terminology

Entries:

  • Dalīl (دليل) = Evidence
  • Ḥukm (حكم) = Ruling, Grading
  • Takhrīj (تخريج) = Analysis of Ḥadīth
  • Sharḥ (شرح) = Explanation

Ḥadīth:

  • Muttafaqun Alayh (‏متفق عليه) = Agreed upon, Ṣaḥīḥ to both Imām al-Bukhārī and Imām Muslim
  • Ṣaḥīḥ (صحيح) = Authentic, Sound
  • Jayyid (جيد) = Good
  • Ḥasan (حسن) = Fair
  • Lighayrihi (لغيره) = Due to others, Due to external evidence
  • Gharīb (غريب) = Strange, A Ḥadīth that has been transmitted by a single narrator
  • Ḍaʾīf (ضعيف) = Weak
  • Mawḍūʾ (موضوع) = Fabricated
  • Marfūʾ (مرفوع) = Statement raised to being the speech of The Prophet ﷺ
  • Mursal (مرسل) = Statement ascribed to The Prophet ﷺ narrated by someone who didn’t hear from him directly
  • Mawqūf (موقوف) = Statement ascribed to a Companion
  • Majhūl (مجهول) = Unknown narrator
  • Kadhāb (كذاب) = Liar
  • Isnād (إسناد) = Chain of narration

General:

  • Sunan (سنن) = Plural of ‘Sunnah’
  • Muḥaddith (محدث) = Traditionist, Scholar of Ḥadīth & It’s sciences
  • Taḥqīq (تحقیق) = Verification & checking of sources
  • Ijmāʿ (إجماع) = Consensus
